Senior Infrastructure Engineer

Location: Northwood, HA6
Salary: £45,000 – £55,000
Contract: Permanent

Are you an experienced Infrastructure Engineer who wants to remain genuinely hands-on with technology rather than move into an operational management role?

Would you like the opportunity to take technical ownership of a large, modern infrastructure environment and play a leading role in cloud migrations, infrastructure modernisation, cybersecurity, automation and Microsoft technology projects?

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Senior Infrastructure Engineer to join the IT Team at St Helen’s School in Northwood.

This is a newly created role as part of a strategic restructuring of the IT team, replacing the former IT Operations Manager position with a highly technical, infrastructure-focused post.

The role will be the department’s senior technical authority for cloud services, identity management, server infrastructure, disaster recovery and Microsoft technologies.

Reporting to the Director of IT, the successful candidate will play a pivotal role in shaping and supporting the School’s hybrid infrastructure, whilst leading technical projects, mentoring colleagues and driving continuous improvement across cloud and on-premises services. The position has been deliberately designed as a hands -on technical role.

Serving approximately 1,500 users across a large independent school campus, the IT team supports a modern technology estate including Microsoft 365, Entra ID, Azure, Intune, Hyper -V, SAN storage, cloud services and a wide range of educational and business systems. St Helen’s School continues to invest in digital transformation, cybersecurity and cloud technologies, making this an exciting opportunity for an infrastructure professional who wants strategic influence and technical ownership without having to step away from the technology into an operations management position.

The successful candidate will work closely with the Director of IT, Network & Operations Engineer, Data Systems & Applications Team and strategic technology partners to deliver infrastructure modernisation, cloud migration initiatives and cybersecurity improvements across St Helen’s School.

The successful candidate will work closely with the Director of IT, Network & Operations Engineer, Data Systems & Applications Team and strategic technology partners to deliver a significant programme of technical work, including:

  • Azure migration and cloud adoption
  • Microsoft 365 optimisation
  • Infrastructure modernisation
  • Backup and disaster recovery enhancements
  • Identity and access management improvements
  • Automation and PowerShell initiatives
  • Device management improvements
  • Software deployment and packaging
  • Cybersecurity enhancement projects

You will also act as the senior technical escalation point for complex infrastructure issues and help raise technical standards across the department through mentoring, knowledge sharing and technical leadership.

Reporting

The Senior Infrastructure Engineer reports directly to the Director of IT and provides day-to-day technical leadership and mentoring to members of the wider IT team.

Hours

08:00 to 16:30 Monday to Friday, with flexibility required to support out-of-hours maintenance, project work and up to three Saturday school events per year.

Benefits

  • 50% fee remission for eligible staff children
  • Pension scheme with up to 10% employer contributions
  • Free lunch during term time
  • On-site parking
  • Access to swimming pool and fitness facilities
  • Generous occupational sick pay
  • Excellent professional development opportunities
  • Beautiful 21-acre campus environment

We recognise that excellent candidates do not always tick every box. If you possess strong infrastructure engineering experience, a passion for technology and the ability to deliver technical excellence, we would be delighted to hear from you.
